Research and Planning: Weather Post

I did some research on what the weather will be like for the next five days. I did this because for pictures such as Paige and Adam's I want the skies to be clear without rain. So from this I can see that I could do my photos on either Monday or Wednesday as those are the days when there will be no rain.

Research and Planning: Costumes and Props List

From research I gathered that boy bands don't usually have props on the cover page as the main focus should be on the boys themselves and what they look like as a group. So for the main picture on the cover I will not have any props for the boy band. The costumes will be clothing that Will, Adam and Callum already have and will be smart/casual which I noticed the boy bands have. I will take pictures and put the boys clothing on post at a later date.

Paige and Adams break up story will show a long shot of them both walking at night-time in a mise en scene that makes it appear that they are both being pictured looking like a troubled couple by the paparazzi. For this to look believable I will need:
  • A cap (Adam)
  • Sunglasses (Paige)
  • Large Coats (Both)

For Raine's section as am advice giver I think to make it look more light-hearted and fun she will be needing props of:
  • Doctors gear
  • Lab coat

Research and Planning: Model Shots

These are the models that I want to use in my magazine. The first three are of Will, Adam and Callum who I will be using to mimic a pop boy band. They will be on the main picture on my cover and will feature in both the contents page and double page spread. This is because in various pop magazines the focus is boy bands as that was young girls are usually interested in as well as the music that they produce. I chose Will, Adam and Callum as I think they fit the "boy band" image well and will look good as  a group.

The following models are Paige and Raine who will also be on the cover of my magazine as in pop magazines a lot of pictures are used. I will be using Paige as one of the boy bands girlfriend who have recently split up as pop magazines writes a lot about peoples relationships.

Raine will be pictured on her own and will have her own section as a celebrity who gives advice. I chose her as I think she is suitable to fit this role.

Research and Planning: Contents Page Draft

This draft will help me a lot when making magazines as I know have all the stories set out and placement of things. I think it is a full contents page which fits the genre of a pop magazine as the colours I will use will be the same as the front cover and I have also added pictures which will stop it from getting boring. I also think it looks well made as it follows the same house style as the cover which will help the reader see a continuous theme with the magazine and will be able to recognise it in a shop. I also think using, "Inside the mag," as a masthead instead of the typical' "Contents,"  as I think it makes it look different and gives it a little more originality.

Research and Planning: Cover Draft

On my cover draft I have added lots of pictures of celebrities as I think in a pop magazine that's what will grab the readers attention as they will see their favourite artists and want to read more about them inside. For now I think the cover is full as I don't know how the size of the pictures will vary when I continue to make the magazine so I will possibly add more cover lines and pictures to fill up any initial space. My magazine will follow three main colours which will be a light pink, purple and white as I think they will contrast each other nicely while still looking girly which is the stereotypical gender that will be reading my magazine. I also think the colours are good as they won't distract from the pictures and cover lines.

Research and Planning: Progress Post

This is the beginning cover page for my music magazine. I chose the background colour as a light pink as I think it is feminine without looking too unprofessional and eye-catching as that would take the attention off the masthead and pictures. At the moment I like the masthead style and colour, however I think that after further progress I may make a decision to alter the font style as I think it could end up looking to babyish and would look odd with the pictures and cover lines that I will be putting on.

Research and Planning: Double page spread draft

On all the text on this spread I will use the sans font as it will make all the writing a lot clearer.
-The picture on the left will be a long shot to show the mise en scene of the picture.
 - I also take an extreme close up of a perfume bottle in a clean enviroment such as a perfume shop to give the impression that it is the bands new brand.

Research and Planning: Discussion on Location Recce

I have just had a discussion with my tutor about when I could use the balcony that our college so I can experience a different Mise en Scene as I think it has great natural lighting and a good view.

She informed me for health and safety reason we will need to go as a group on a specific day with a teacher present.

Research and Planning: 5 Double Page Spreads Analysis

All of these magazines have a similar colour scheme in common of white, pink and orange colours which are resembling the artists in the magazine. I noticed that when the artists were attracted the main quote that was shown was about dating for example the Justin Bieber spread.

They also have a large picture that covers one side of the magazine. This in my opinion resembles the  artists. For example Cher looks quite cheeky in her and Taylor looks rather sweet which reflects the artists persona. In my magazine I will have the band (Will, Adam and Callum," looking very close and cheeky which is what I think the audience will want to see.

The majority of the double-page spread was also filled with an interview. Which was both personal and asked about the career of the artists. So on my magazine I will make sure to have an interview with questions on both the career of the artist and their social life.

The shots are either long shots when the artist are wearing outfits that may represent themselves such as Cher, where as some more serious artists who sing about serious things such as Jessie J, the shot is a close up. As the band featuring in my magazine are quite fun and lighthearted I will take a picture of them in a long shot which will make it easier for me to show their relationship and personalities.

Research and Planning: Serif/ Sans Serif

Serifs are the small lines tailing from the edges of letters and symbols.Serif fonts are easier to read in printed works. This is because the serif make the individual letters more distinctive and easier for out brains to recognise quickly. Without the serif, the letters are harder to read as the shape is less distinctive. For all the writing on my double-page spread as the writing will be a lot more easier to read. Especially as my magazine is a pop magazine so younger people who may be reading it need the letters to be more easy to read.

Research and Planning: SLR Test Shots

This picture was taken with a flash indoors. I chose to take this picture to show how something like this could be put in my magazine to help the audience browse new products that the magazine could be advertising. It could also be a piece of jewellery that a celebrity could have been photographed with.
This is used with the detail setting which i think shows it in a lot better quality so if I was to use it in my magazine I would use this setting.
This picture was taken to show a long shot. This is used with a flash which is good as it makes the place look brighter and less dull.
This is used with the landscape setting which is better as it makes everything look a lot more crisp and clean.
This is a test shot close up of Rebecca with and without flash. I think using flash makes the indoor picture a lot better quality. Rebecca will not be used in my magazine because i think she looks to punk for my pop magazine and wouldn't really fit with the other people that will be in it.

These test shots are of an extreme close up. This one is used with a detail setting and the other is used without. I think that the natural lighting is a lot better than the indoor with a flash because i think it looks a lot nicer. The detail setting also is a lot better than the normal.

This is a medium close up of Mo. He will not be used it my magazine because he will not be available on the day of the shoot.
These are long shots from outside to show the different lighting from outside and inside. I think that outside again has a lot nicer lighting and looks more professional rather than indoor with a flash on. I also used the landscape setting on the first one which I think made it a lot more crisp.

Research and Planning: Publication plan

Name: Chixz as stereotypically young girls will be reading my magazine and I think the title fits that age group
Price: £2.40 because my interviews told me that the prices shouldn't be too high as the age group that would be buying it will most likely not have an income
Positioning Statement:-
Distrubution: In all magazine/everyday shops so young girls and boys can find them in a variety of places and as it is coming out monthly they will know where to find it.
Frequency of Publication: New issue every month as i think that every week is to often as parents may get sick of paying but every month is the right amount
Rationale: To inform young teenagers of the music industry of pop
Style/Layout/Colour: Packed with images, bold with losts of bubble writing
Regular content: Products of the month
Feautred Content: -

Research and Planning: Band Hair and Clothing

From these pictures i understood that most boys in bands have similar hairstyles. I also noticed that in photo shoots the clothes are all pretty similar with the same colours but different variations to show off the artists different style preference. They all have pretty tanned faces so I will have to put make up on my models to darken their faces and bronzer to enhance features.

Research and Planning: Contents page interview questions

On other pop magazines there is usually an interview of a bband/artist that features on the magazine. So i will ask Will, Callum and Adam the following questions as they are pretending to be a boyband and write down the interview on the contents page. The interview will also feature as a cover line.

Interview:
I: Hi, how are you all? C: Not bad. Just a little tired from touring
I: How is the tour going? C: Absolutely amazing, the places we play in are beautiful. W: Our fans also just make the experience so much better.
I: Adam i understand it was your birthday last week. Did you have a good time? A: Yeah it was good. Nice to see all !y family and friends back home.
I: What did you two both get him? C: I got him the new series of Sons of Anarcy on DVD. A: Will tell them what you got me. W: Uhh... It's still being delivered
I: Will you were seen leaving a party with Kylie Jenner. Is there anything we should know about? W: Ha! No not at all were just good friends that's all.
I: How excited are you all for the new fragurance? A: So ready, can't wait for all the hard work to pay off. C: Me too W: Yeah Adam i found your birthday present

I will also put a image of the group in the contents page.

Research and Planning: Cover Photo

From my research i gathered that the majority of pop magazines don't have one picture on their on cover. They normally have a main picture in the centre which relates to the following pages. I also gathered that the main picture is usually a boy band or male singer due to girls wanting to see that sort of person. So on my magazine i will take a group photo of boys, making them look like they are in a boy band in a med shot. I will also take pictures of of other people and things suchbas accessories and clothing in close ups.

Research and Planning: Quesionnaire Questions

I asked these interview questions to gain insight to the production of my magazine such as what pictures and cover lines I will be putting in it. For example from the question "What topics would you like to see on a pop magazine?" I found that people would generally want to read things like celebrities love lives so that is what I will include in my magazine. I found the questionnaire helpful as it helped me understand people's perception on pop magazines while getting ideas on what to put on my own.

Research and Planning: Podcast

Research and Planning: Collage

What i learnt from this collage is that nearly all of the magazines have a long shot or medium close up as a star on thep page. They also almost all include quotes or interviews. The important writing and masterheads are all bold and bright to help them stand out, like the colour scheme which is very bright and happy.

Research and Planning: Contents page analysis

This contents page includes a lot of pictures which grab the attention of a younger audience while relating to the information of the magazine. The contents page master head isn't stereotypical and says "WE LOVE THIS" which i think is more immature and again shows the audience. The actual contents pages only take up a small about of the page using two different colours to make it look creative. It also uses a small interview and quotes of artists to grab the attention of the target audience, while giving them insight.

Research and Planning: Double page spread analysis

This double page spread has bold titles for the master head and for the interview questions which is to stand out and single the sentences out from the others. There is a main picture that takes up the right hand side which is used to draw in the audience of young girls as they can get a good look at him. Both shot types are medium long shots which are used to show the style of the star and his relationship with him and the girl they are most likely talking about. The colour scheme of this is mostly a bright pink colour which also shows to me that the age range is stereotypically young girls. The font is also the same which makes the spread look professional and consistent.

Research and Planning: Magazine titles

I went on dafont.com to test out different fonts that I could use on my music magazine. The title of my magazine is going to be Chixz as I think it sounds both girly and catchy so people will be able to remember it. I think the fonts also look girly as well and will fit well with the genre of pop and the cover lines and pictures that I will be using. For now I have the colour as pink but when I begin the production of my magazine this may change as it may look too unprofessional so I may change it too a purple or blue.

Research and Planning : Music Magazine Anaylsis Covers

These magazines are both pop magazines. I am analysing both of these as it will help me understand the type of things that I should put in my magazine.

From these two covers I gathered that a lot of pop magazines have a boy band on the front cover as that's what young girls are interested in. They also all have what I think pretty girly colours to draw the attention that the audience is focusing on.

The main image is also a long shot on both covers to help show the audience the relationship and personalities of the groups rather the groups needing to look good.

The cover lines are also primarily about the lives of people in the pop industry with quotes to gain the attention of the reader and to give them a small look of what's going to be inside by talking about relationships and personal lives of the pop artists.

The overall presentation on the different magazines are different. For example the first magazine I think takes a more professional approach then the second with a neater text and colour scheme, where as the second looks a lot more girly in my opinion.

I want my magazine to look more professional the girly as I think if I was to buy one of the magazines it would be the first one as it fits age group more.

Research and Planning: Drafts for College Magazine

To make these i used indesign and photoshop.  Photoshop using the lasso tool to cut out a picture of will and use it as my main cover. Indesign was used to create the contents page.
